For our long-awaited revival of the Yiddish Culture Club’s Short Story Reading Group (SSRG), we will explore the works of another Father of Yiddish literature, Sholem Aleichem.

By clicking the links below, you can read “On Account of a Hat” (1913) and “Eternal Life” (1904), from Irving Howe and Eliezer Greenberg’s A Treasury of Yiddish Stories, New York: Viking Press (1968).

I.L. Peretz

Union South, 1360 W. Dayton St.

For our first Yiddish in translation short story reading group, we will be exploring some of the works of I.L.Peretz, considered one of the three great classical Yiddish writers alongside Sholem Aleichem and Mendele Mokher Sforim.

For our upcoming meeting, we will focus on three short stories: “If Not Higher” (Oyb Nisht Nokh Hekher), “Bontsha the Silent” (Bontshe Shvayg), and “The Golem.” Since some members of our group may have encountered these stories previously, “If Not Higher” has two different translation options for those who wish to compare.

If Not Higher (Version #1)

If Not Higher (Version #2)
