Yiddish

The study of Yiddish language and culture is enjoying a renaissance at UW. In 2010, a $1 million lead gift from Sherry Mayrent allowed us to establish the Mayrent Institute for Yiddish Culture, and the Center for Jewish Studies is in the process of expanding our academic, cultural, and community programming in Yiddish. In July 2011, the first annual Madison Summer KlezKamp, under the direction of Henry Sapoznik, was held at Hillel at UW–Madison. That same week, the twelfth annual Greenfield Summer Institute offered a series of lectures on the theme of “Yiddish in the Twenty-first Century.”
