Philip Hollander was awarded his Ph.D in Hebrew literature from Columbia University. After teaching at Tulane University, he recently assumed an assistant professorship in Israeli literature and culture at University of Wisconsin-Madison. His current book project explores early twentieth century Palestinian Hebrew literature’s role in the struggle to define and inculcate the gender and sexual norms considered best suited for the evolving Palestinian Jewish community’s envisioned transformation into an autonomous national community. His forthcoming article, “The Role of Homosociality in Palestinian Hebrew Literature: A Case Study of Levi Aryeh Arieli’s ‘Yeshimon,”’ will introduce important elements of his book’s argument to a wide readership when it appears in Prooftexts. Hollander’s research interests also include Israeli cinema, early Israeli prose, Holocaust literature, and American Hebrew literature, and he has published and forthcoming articles treating these topics. During Fall 2009, he will be teaching Introduction to Hebrew Literature and Readings in Contemporary Hebrew Literature, while, in Spring 2010, he will be teaching Introduction to Modern Jewish Literature and Readings in Contemporary Hebrew Literature. While the fall Readings course will focus on Hebrew Holocaust representation, the spring Readings course will explore contemporary Israeli literature alongside contemporary Israeli music and cinema.
