2008 / 2009 - Bilha Mirkin (senior lecturer) has been teaching at the UW-Madison Department of Hebrew and Semitic Studies since 1977. Her Hebrew courses cover six semesters of Hebrew language and literature. The courses integrate language skills with readings, songs and presentations which enrich the students and anchor the language program in a social-cultural context. Students take an active part in weekly lab work and in research projects. The literature course (302) is conducted in Hebrew. Students read stories and poems which give them a taste of modern Hebrew literature and open a window to a better understanding of Israeli society, history and politics. Israeli movies are woven into the curriculum to better achieve this goal. The learning is intensive but the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. The classroom often becomes a” home away from home”. Bilha takes part in the Hebrew presentation of “World Language Day” every April. The day is dedicated to presenting the richness of the language programs available to potential UW students from all over Wisconsin.
